Kat Macdonald is a London-based sound and media artist exploring collective practice, embodiment and technology. Her work uses pedagogy, open scoring and collective activations as a method to draw attention to social systems and infrastructures that lie unacknowledged in everyday life.
Her current practice explores inner city living and spaces of community, looking at how public space and micro publics (sites of everyday cultural exchange) play a role in holding and building communities and networks of care. Her work looks at how these spaces are changing in response to technology and privatisation, influencing our relationship to otherness.
She is the founder and organiser of the London Community Laptop Orchestra (2024 - ), an all-abilities, community-organised laptop collective and research project. The LCLO takes social/ technological theory and infrastructure, and represents them through collective participatory actions. The project is site specific, seeking to grow through ‘branching’ and deviation, rather than touring, borrowing from the principles of the decentralised web and ‘open source’ cultures.
She has worked as an artist, a technician, a chef, a graphic designer, a web designer, a sales assistant, a social media manager, a bartender, an art handler, a kitchen porter, a communications manager, in IT, in convenience stores, in cafes, in galleries, in nightclubs, in advertising, in offices, out of offices, in the field, in the studio, in the garden and internationally.
