TEMPORARY SPACE | PORTABLE GALLERY is a collectively organised art show in Burgess Park, taking place sometime in JUNE 2026 with the aim of rethinking institutional art structures through the methods of public art and collective gathering.
It’ll take place across Burgess Park, using a PORTABLE SPACE that allows us to generate a day-by-day TEMPORARY GALLERY for artists to perform in, hang work and build around. Inspired by the occupation of art institutes in the Sessantotto” (1968) and the work of the Anarchitecture” (1974) show in New York, we look to rethink not just the ‘white cube’ but also the gallery, its walls, permanence and authority over art culture.

The show is structured around the TEMPORARY SPACE, a simply modular structure made up of (at least); x8 poles, x6 tapestries and a length of rope. At the beginning and end of every day the structure will be assembled and disassembled, changing shape, size and location.

This is an open invitation to artists who would like to be involved, to join us in not just the show itself, but helping organise and rethink the gallery. We are hoping for works to be developed through the ideas and discussions had at meetings, rather than worked on in isolation. The meetings and community form the core ethos for making, while existing pieces are fine, we want to explore what can be generated from interactions directly with the space.
These meetings will be held in person to organise the show and discuss its themes and structure. The show centre’s the material and communal aspects of public art, we believe that to engage with the space meaningfully, we must inhabit the space IRL (in real life).
We will be meeting weekly on Tuesdays at the Camberwell Road / Walworth Road gate at 6pm.
