Written in response to the UK Supreme Court ruling and statements made by the UK government with regards to trans+ people’s access to bathrooms.

Open Call

Stage works in (and about) public bathrooms with a focus on institutions that refuse to make statements or make their bathrooms accessible to transgender people.

These works can take the form of photography, performance art, concerts, digital art, web art, exhibitions, posters, literary works and fine art. Within these works there must be a meaningful engagement with the space, either politically, architecturally or conceptually. I am less interested in works that don’t present a conflict with these spaces.

Anyone can partake in this study, with an encouragement for cis participants to focus on riskier disruptive actions, centering the institution as the core audience.

Each work will be catalogued and archived in a bathroom study archive. To get involved in the archive, reach out via email.

Prompts

Host a concert in a bathroom.

Turn a bathroom into an installation.

Write speculative fiction about bathrooms.

Hold an exhibition in a bathroom.

Gather people within a bathroom.

Why?

I believe art has the potential to reject two dimensional concerns of ‘representing’ society and can, in the right circumstances, enact social change through its application. The role of political art is vital to any social movement, specifically those opposing systems of oppression.

It’s through this that I hope these works encourage an engagement with public space (particularly those of public restrooms), to encourage people to challenge regulations that choose to prohibit who is allowed in a space and who isn’t.

It’s key to these acts that the institution and the state should be the targets. Not the people, who should be encouraged to be co-conspirators, participants and allies in our actions.

Should We Work With Institutions?

(Regarding only as it applies to this work, rather than a broader consideration)

I am inclined to say yes but only within specific terms. The work should not absolve the institution. Instead a dynamic should exist that the artist works as an educator for the institution on the importance of accessibility within their public spaces.

The institution must not extract financial profits from the work. Profit is not an educator but an excuse for engagements with political behavior that creates a threadbare relationship to the ethical and the profitable, that forever favours the profitable. Our work must not (to borrow from artist Tania Bruguera), become a “quote” but rather it must represent a “political gesture”.

Institutions that are directly antagonistic towards the goal of the study (ie. have spaces which are tranexculsionary), should not be worked with and instead works should wrestle with this within the piece.
